| The basic gameplay of DDR 2nd Mix follows the rest of the ''[[Dance Dance Revolution]]'' series. One player can play using one dance pad (Single mode), two players can play using one dance pad each (Versus mode), or one player can play using both dance pads (Double mode). There is also Couple mode, which gives each player different step patterns that complement each other. Couple mode is only available on 2nd Mix and its [[#Other arcade versions of 2nd Mix|variations]], but later inspired Unison mode in [[Dance Dance Revolution 3rdMIX|3rd Mix]], and Battle mode in [[Dance Dance Revolution 4thMIX|4th Mix]].

| A player must step to the beat, matching the beat to the arrows presented to them on screen by stepping on arrows on a metal-and-[[acrylic glass]] [[dance stage]]. A judgment is displayed for each step, depending on the player's timing: "PERFECT!!", "GREAT!", "GOOD", "BOO" or "MISS..". An on-screen life meter, known as the Dance Gauge, begins halfway full at the start of each song. Perfect and Great steps slowly fill the Gauge, while Boo and Miss steps quickly deplete it. Good steps have no effect either way. If a player accumulates too many Boos or Misses, and the Dance Gauge becomes empty, the player fails the song and the game ends.

| A player may play anywhere from one to five songs (not including extra stages), depending on how many the arcade operator sets the machine to play each game. At the end of each song, the player sees their accumulated points, bonus points, and how many of each kind of step they stepped. They also get a letter grade that is dependent on the judgments received during play, ranging from "SS" (all steps Perfect or Great with at least 50% Perfects) to "E" (failure). If the player manages to pass his or her songs, a cumulative results screen is given, totalling the stats from all played stages.

The "spinning CD" loading screens from 1st Mix have been replaced with text displaying the player's progress (such as "1st Stage", "2nd Stage", "Final Stage"). The interface transitions between screens are also smoother.

Later in 1999, Dance Dance Revolution 2ndReMIX APPEND CLUB VERSiON vol.1 and Dance Dance Revolution 2nd ReMIX APPEND CLUB VERSiON vol.2 were released in Japan for the PlayStation. Each of these has about half the songs of Club Version 2 (arcade). Unfortunately,DDR CLUB VERSION 1 is defective, the Append Disc can be loaded but features such as Information, Edit, etc do not work and the arrows tend to go out of sync. only DDR CLUB VERSION 2 can able to play and functions properly.
On February 17, 2000, Konami released a version of Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX for the Sega Dreamcast console. It features 43 songs, seven of which are hidden and unlockable. The song list includes seven songs from DDR 3rd Mix.
On April 27, 2000, Konami released Dance Dance Revolution CLUB VERSiON Dreamcast Edition for the Sega Dreamcast. They took advantage of the larger media format for Dreamcast and consolidated the two DDR 2nd Mix Club Versions into one game.
A few of the songs in DDR 2nd Mix were included in the U.S. version of Dance Dance Revolution for the Sony PlayStation.
Soundtrack
Toshiba_EMI veröffentlichte in Japan eine Soundtrack CD mit 32 Titeln des Spiels. Diese CD wurde am 28. Apüril 1999 veröffentlicht.
